P1

I am planning to do a story about Sword Art Online and its predictions on the way that Virtual Reality is going to develop and the problems that could come from it.

Comparison of the two podcasts:

Steve Lamacq's Podcast compared with Tone Supa's Pokemon go and doom review
Steve and his team seemed to have lots of experience, not only because it was BBC 6 but also because of the way it seemed to be created. It felt like a casual recording session in which the group was just talking and someone hit record by mistake.

With the Pokemon Go review and the Doom review, the guy was by himself and was trying to keep the listener engaged with awkward comments and what seemed just to be craziness. He expressed himself rather poorly and censored some swearing but then swears later on so wasn't too consistent with his creating or sound effects.

I found that Tone Supa did an amateur job at making this podcast and definitely needs to learn what is good with what he does and what needs to drastically change. Steve Lamacq's podcast seemed to be almost perfect

The do's and don'ts of Podcasting:

  1. DO use equipment to direct the microphone to pick up the speakers voice
  2. DONT make bad jokes and drag them on for more than 10 seconds maximum
  3. DONT make the intro too long (any longer than 15 seconds) as the reader will start to think it isn't a serious podcast and just some students messing around.
  4. DO change your pace and tone to show your emotions like excitement or sadness
  5. DO change your background audio every now and then but make sure it's not complicated otherwise the listeners will listen to that and not your voice
  6. DO have a target audience in mind and DO make jokes aimed towards that audience
  7. DO have different guests to come in and talk to you about any problems the topic of your podcast has but also its strengths too
  8. DO try to have good timing for jokes and do try to keep it right, if it isn't right then try to redo the audio
  9. DO have a balanced opinion about the topics and refer to the good parts and the bad parts of your topic.
  10. DO write a script of what you're going to say to eliminate the need for "um" or words with a similar usage

Reviewing a Podcast

In the first 5 mins of the podcast, I chose the intro took up about half of it and the introduction took the rest of the time up and they hadn't finished. This group of podcasters does need to speed things up bearing in mind their podcast was only 10 mins long. They made some good points in their introduction about the game itself but not onto the topic of their podcast. I lost interest in the podcast before the intro even ended.

Here is an Example of a script which would be used to make a podcast go smoother

Intro Music from TV Show

Host: Hello Listeners, Welcome to this podcast about the Anime, Sword Art Online! In this anime, the protagonist is trapped in a virtual reality game with real-life death consequences. 10,000 copies of a game that was a physical copy only buy were sold out instantly and in the evening of the first night of it being online, the world goes into panic! All the players were trapped and if anybody forcefully took off the headsets of the players, their minds would be destroyed by a strong electromagnetic pulse. The only way for the players to survive was to beat the game.   (30 Seconds)

The game could only be beaten by either killing the game developer in a 1 vs 1 duel in which he was hidden among the players so nobody knew who he was or by clearing the boss on each of the 100 levels and therefore winning the game. Kirito clears the game but then plays a game called Alfheim in which he finds the woman he loves traped as she never woke up from the Sword Art Online incident. He rescues her alongside two classes of elf and his sister. They then go to a school for all of the sword art online students to catch up on the two years of education that they missed.  (30 seconds)

What is going to be focused on in this podcast are the problems shown by the developers about virtual reality and what problems could develop from Virtual Reality. Here is Joseph who has also watched the anime to help me talk about this topic. (10 seconds)

INTERVIEW - IMPROVISATION
  1. Do you think the VR problems shown could happen in the real world? (20 seconds)
  2. What do you think you would do in a situation like the one the players were faced with? (20 seconds)
  3. Do you think the science of how the NerveGear killed people could be possible within the next 5 years? (20 seconds)

Adobe Audition was a new program for me to use. I went through and cleaned up the audio and then added an effect. This is what I did:

After clicking this you max out the normalise setting and that's all you need to do

After clicking this you max out this setting too and then that's your audio all cleaned up!

With this, I was messing around with the audio and decided to use a "squirrelly" effect which made my show's name sound quite fun yet also serious at the same time.

This is not a complete script, but an example of how you could lay it out, with
timings, each segment clearly identified, all elements id
identified
you should include all elements,
such
as Jingle
es, Tracks, DJ voice, live chat, interview, news segment, ambient background music, Vox Pops,
etc.
By the end of the script, you should be able to add all the estimated timings up and work out roughly
how long the show is, If it seems too short (e.g. below 15 minutes) you can add more in and if it seems
t
oo long (e.g. over 30 minutes) you can cut things out. Remember to keep a copy of the original draft
though, to show your progress and use as a comparison in your evaluation section!
